More and more Atlantans are discovering the perks of hi-rise living, and this new construction penthouse is a meticulously curated home for a young family.

Traci Rhoads, principal of Traci Rhoads Interiors, took on the challenge of transforming a newly constructed space into a luxurious penthouse residence suitable for a young, well-traveled family. Much of the design inspiration was inspired by the client’s unique art collection, for which the unadorned, sprawling windows paired with gallery white walls acted as the backdrop. Choosing to relocate to this high-rise retreat with a young family represents a practical compromise, ensuring the family’s overall comfort while also embracing all of the exciting things the city has to offer. Once the vision was set, TRI and the client worked closely to bring the design to life. The foundation of the design was a neutral foundation of a black and white color palette with contrasting pops of pink and striking yellows. Throughout the penthouse, you will discover a coherent implementation of geometry to enhance the serene ambiance. This throughline presents an inherent design balance. The client was drawn to stunning pieces, choosing those that were both beautiful and emitted positive energy. With every detail, there is a deeper meaning behind a color choice or ornamental placement. Each space is elevated through a conversation piece. Alexander McQueen’s age-old symbol of luxury, the “Beetle,” and a Brazilian quartz chandelier welcome guests in the foyer. The custom Calcutta marble-topped table facilitates conversation in the dining room, while artisanal moments speak to the bespoke environment that elevates penthouse living.

While such sprawling windows lend the space ample natural light, the challenge came in selecting interior accent colors. Rhodes found that a color seen in one setting might have a completely different effect in a different space due to the exposure. In the end, each room’s design reflects the client’s happy disposition. This is seen in the bold pops of color woven into neutral moments. Texture and simple lines ground each design direction, as seen in the understated seating in the dining room and sleek bar stools covered in shagreen leather. While the patterns and mediums are playful, the basic palette connects each vignette to the next.

In the primary bedroom, Rhodes really leaned into playing with color, as seen in the bold, almost golden yellow. Also, in the primary suite, an original piece of art acquired on an adventure is lit by a neon “Life is Beautiful” sign. Personal touches are incorporated in the decor to reflect the clients’ traveling spirit and memorabilia collected along the way. By embracing a client’s personal belongings, often the treasures in the collection act as a catalyst for the overall vision. There were also some choices that went against the client’s typical aesthetic. An aversion to wallpaper quickly subsided with the perfect pattern to tie the home together at every turn. This home was a testament to the expertise needed to transform a space into a coveted abode that speaks to its owner and the memories to be made between the walls.
