Tina Ramchandani Transforms A 20th-Century Park Slope Brownstone

Tina Ramchandani transformed a 20th-century Park Slope brownstone while paying homage to its storied past.

THE PROJECT

When a family of four decided to trade their 800-square-foot New York apartment for a sprawling five-bedroom brownstone in Park Slope, interior designer Tina Ramchandani of her eponymous design firm helped the couple add new life to their soon-to-be home. “They wanted to create a fresh, uplifting, child-friendly space,” says Ramchandani.

THE PROCESS

“Because the brownstone was in very good shape,” Ramchandani adds, “we only had to make a few tweaks to achieve that.” In doing so, she played around with existing structures, opting for a palette of cream tones and complementing them with subtle hues of blue to craft a space that felt bright and airy, just as the homeowners had envisioned.

“We wanted bright and airy, so we opted for creams and shades of blue throughout,” says the designer.

THE DETAILS

The most striking aspect of the home is how different shades of blue foreshadow each room’s vibe, whether it’s the kids reading area in an inviting sky blue or the darker shades incorporated in the furniture as a contrast to the white, textured walls. The guest bedroom, which aunts a freshness reminiscent of the Mediterranean, was designed to double as the wife’s home office, while the primary bedroom exudes a “comfortable environment that perfectly blends his and her styles,” says Ramchandani. “We used a wallpaper by Philip Jeffries, which felt the perfect amount of warmth and not too modern. It allowed other elements in the room to shine.” Downstairs, she built a gym for the couple, who had met at a gym and are passionate about fitness, “We also set up a family room and, through tailor-made millwork, crafted a storage space for the kids,” shares Ramchandani.

THE CHALLENGE

Perhaps the biggest, but also the most fun, challenge for Ramchandani and her team was reinventing the home study to showcase the husband’s interest in historical memorabilia while ensuring it aligned with the home’s overall aesthetic. To accomplish this, Ramchandani elevated the existing bookshelves by incorporating antique mirrors and painting the fireplace as well as surrounding walls in deep shades of blue. For added depth and character, she paired in another Philip Jefferies wallpaper in gray, complementing the darker blue tones in the room. There were also a few unexpected delays with furniture and material deliveries. However, everything was swiftly resolved.

THE OUTCOME

Through thoughtful choices and minimal restructuring, Ramchandani’s design vision transformed this brownstone into a contemporary home that perfectly reflects the personality and style of the family. Sophisticated yet fun, it’s a space that they will cherish for years to come.
