Theresa Butler revitalizes her traditional Tudor home with bold colors and original artwork.

THE CLIENT

Theresa Butler, owner and principal designer of Theresa Butler Interiors, wants her home to be thoughtfully curated and timeless. She worked as a nurse anesthetist for over 10 years but rediscovered her passion for interior design during the pandemic. As an interior designer, she collaborates closely with clients to create a space that reflects their unique style and personality.

THE PROJECT

Butler aims to create the perfect fusion of functionality and style in her whimsical Tudor-style home. The Gauley River home is traditional with “touches of elegance and modern elements,” she notes. She designed each room to exude a different feeling and employs her love of color and classic taste to create a timeless and fun interior. While the secondary office serves as an “inspiration studio” for her designs, the primary suit is a “sanctuary of comfort and style,” she says.

THE INSPIRATION

Several elements guide the design of Butler’s rooms, including personal art pieces and bold wallpaper. The custom silk yellow curtains in the primary office, and the stack of National Geographic Magazines dating back to 1927 highlight her partiality to the color yellow. Butler’s original artwork and sentimental pieces spread throughout the house serve as an anchor for the layout of each room. The spaces within her home are artfully layered to create a sense of timeless elegance, comfort and style.

THE CHALLENGE

The footprint of the primary bathroom presented a unique challenge for Butler. “The room was taken down to the studs,” she says and had to be reworked. By installing a floor-to-ceiling glass door in the shower and a low-decibel fan, Butler created the ambiance of a steam room. Each element in the bathroom complements the other. A ceramic celadon vase inspires the bathroom design, and Benjamin Moore paint, window shades, and marble work in unison to complete the space.

THE OUTCOME

Butler’s clever use of bold colors and striking accents adds a unique flare to her home. “What I loved most about this project was working with color and wallpaper,” she shares. “We applied wallpaper in four different areas, which really transformed each space. I took great pleasure in designing environments that truly reflected my personality. I chose pieces and objects that not only held personal significance but also evoked emotions whenever I entered the room.”
