THE PROJECT

After several people referred Stephanie Larsen to a young entrepreneurial couple seeking an overhaul of their Sedona retreat, the designer dove into a complete remodel, transforming the Tuscan-inspired interiors into a light and bright modern mountain home. “Interestingly, I had designed the home’s previous interior as well for the property’s prior owners, so it was really incredible to revisit the space so many years later and have the chance to reinvent it anew,” Larsen shares.

THE PRIORITIES

“The owners wanted a home that felt both casual and glamorous, pairing cool organic neutrals and steel blues with brushed gold and crystal accents that infuse the space with a sense of calming luxury,” Larsen explains, noting that significant changes were required throughout. “Wellness was a focus for the overall energy of the space, so elements like an open floor plan, ample natural light, space for social connection and amenities like a swimming pool, meditation room, float tank, home gym and infrared sauna were a priority.” Passionate entertainers, the homeowners desired a large kitchen with amenities like seating for 17 and multiple warming drawers; four guest rooms with king-size beds and an extra-long sectional in the great room.

THE INSPIRATION

“The property overlooks Cathedral Rock, and we wanted that to be a focal point, prioritizing windows that let the spectacular vista take center stage,” Larsen says. “We also chose to leave the home’s original whiskey-toned trim details as it offered a subtle nod to the red rock landscape of Sedona,” she adds. “These elements set the foundation for a home deeply rooted in the natural world, and it was a theme we continued throughout, using crystals and natural stone to ground the space, imbuing it with a sense of positive energy.”

THE DETAILS

With an eye-catching hand-selected and backlit blue onyx slab framed in brushed gold, the foyer sets the tone for guests as soon as they enter the home. A brushed gold chandelier by Kelly Wearstler for Visual Comfort, a soft gray area rug from Organic Looms and a plush ivory and gold ottoman by Thayer Coggin are a perfect complement.

The kitchen required a more extensive overhaul. To improve the flow of the layout, Larsen and the team removed wing walls at the front of the room and placed windows to the left and right of the cooktop to bring in natural light and frame the red rock views. “The kitchen island is the centerpiece of the room’s functionality,” says Larsen. “It has been increased fourfold in size from the original layout, providing ample space to serve and prepare food without confinement.”

Larsen also designed the glamorous great room and dining room with entertaining in mind. “Starting with a foundational palette of neutrals, we chose to carry through the home’s color story with steel blue and brushed gold details, using pillows, chairs and a gold-edged glass-top coffee table to bring these common threads to life,” says Larsen of the space. “A Nathan Anthony sectional, over 10 feet long, also provides plenty of room to sprawl out or seat multiple guests, depending on the client’s needs.” The dining room’s glam metallic ombre gold wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries is a definite highlight. “Crafted from Shetland horsehair, authentic metallic leafing is hand-placed by skilled artisans, creating a distinctively layered texture that brings a soft dimension to the space,” explains Larsen.

Other highlights include wellness amenities woven throughout. “In my design practice, I pride myself on being on the cutting edge of wellness and high-vibrational design practices,” says Larsen, who calls out the home’s infrared sauna, meditation room, Pilates studio, home gym and float tank. “One of the highlights of this project was getting to employ this knowledge in such an all-encompassing way.”

THE OUTCOME

After revealing the completed home, the homeowners were thrilled. “As a finished project, the space offers a sense of sophistication that sets you at ease,” says Larsen. “Its ample natural light, free-flowing floor plan, carefully integrated collection of crystals and wellness-centered amenities bring a beautiful energy to the space that is both laidback and glamorous in equal measure.”
