Shawn Amtower, proprietor of Amtower Interior + Design, recently transformed her client’s basement into a luxurious sanctuary. “My goal was a high-end hotel feel surrounded by bench-made furniture, lighting, and blue-chip artists,” says the award-winning interior designer.

Shawn created a fully-customized space that is nothing short of extraordinary. “All of the lighting is made to order through R Hughes. The lighting in the bar is Apparatus; the piece over the pool table is by Christopher Boots, and the chandelier over the chairs on the platform is from Alexander Lamont. Lighting is one of my favorite things, so I like unique pieces that all work together as far as material and shape.”

Appointed with a bespoke billiards table, a large projection screen hidden in the ceiling, a showstopping bar outfitted with custom steel shelving, and various cozy nooks –this multifunctional space is equipped to host movie nights, game days, glamorous fêtes, and intimate moments by the fireplace. The moody design features a cocktail of shapes, textures, elevations, and smoky-mirrored walls that work together harmoniously. Shawn successfully achieved a cozy yet luxe feel by utilizing a combination of textiles, including velvet (pillows), Alpaca fleece (barstools and chairs), and textured fabric (sofas). Every piece was thoughtfully curated. “The combo of the wood tones, the stone, brass accents, and the fabrics all add to the refined modern aesthetic and invite you in.”

The perfect balance between light and dark is seen in the white oak flooring and linear white marble fireplace juxtaposed with the dark walls of various compositions: black paint, rich walnut (a collaboration with Nella Vetrina in Italy), and slabs of black Nero Marquina porcelain (bar walls). “The intensity of the walnut wall with the pattern of the grains and metal strips is highly impressive. The wood is inviting and comforting. Because the walls are dark, walking down into the basement instantly gives you a feeling quite different from the rest of the house, and that’s what I was trying to achieve. It’s the client’s favorite spot.” amtowerdesign.com
