THE LOCATION
Walking into this modern coastal apartment in Sunny Isles Beach, it’s easy to see why the owners fell in love with the location. With expansive ocean views from nearly every room, the condominium provides the ideal vacation destination for the owners to relax and rejuvenate. Designed by Sarah Zohar of Sarah Z Designs (sarahzdesigns.com), the residence offers the ultimate getaway. “This is a vacation home for our clients—they are originally from New York,” says Zohar. “This is where they come to unwind and enjoy their family.”

THE PALETTE
Zohar and her team breathed a nautical palette into the 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom residence, using the ocean’s natural blue tones to inspire the interior’s natural aesthetic. “We like to incorporate biophilic elements into our projects in this manner; it’s subdued yet impactful,” Zohar says.

Using creams and light woods to mimic the sand, Zohar and her team created a cohesive, seamless design that brings the outside inward. The color palette lends itself to an elevated and sophisticated beach-like feel, especially in the kitchen, where a waterfall countertop acts as a metaphor for the design inspiration. Creamy Cristallo slabs wash over this space and, together with custom millwork, invoke a feeling of the sandy shore meeting the ocean, which is visible through the floorto- ceiling windows. Continuing the biophilic approach, Zohar and her team incorporated hits of blue throughout the unit, mimicking a waterscape. Supporting details include nature-inspired wallpaper in the guest bedrooms, a bespoke blue sofa in the family room, and a living room rug that all aspire to create a seaside sanctuary. “The design inspiration for this was a contemporary coastal condo,” Zohar says. “We tied in the blues from the ocean and used creams and light woods to mimic the sand. Our philosophy will always be to design around the client’s lifestyle and needs, incorporating the exterior and pulling it in to create a seamless design.”

THE PROJECT
Merging functionality with elegance, the project required a complete gut and remodel. “Our biggest challenge was moving the kitchen island, as we had to move existing plumbing to a different location. But the result was worth it,” Zohar said. “We moved the kitchen island, made with Dini Mobili, and elongated it to accommodate their large family, which opened up the area and made the space look larger. We also knocked down a wall blocking the kitchen area, replaced it with a wine rack, and built a bar for them.” Featuring Cristallo quartzite countertops alongside custom millwork and cabinetry, this kitchen is a welcoming space within the apartment, with the real centerpiece—the custom wine rack—marrying form and function with the art of gathering.

With art and accents peppered throughout the project, including the sunny yellow Assouline coffee table book in the living room, Zohar incorporated injections of vibrancy to contrast with the neutral home furnishings. “The client bought their art pieces based on the accessories that we specified,” she says, noting the bold pops of colors. “They chose colorful and contemporary art pieces that tied beautifully to the design.” Hubbardton Forge sconces signal the entry, casting a whimsical glow and introducing the element of sculptural lighting found throughout; the stone on the walls of the primary bath provides another sand-inspired nod to nature.

A vacation home at heart, the design needed to lend itself most to family. “The unit caters to their kids and grandchildren, so we added small double-twin beds to their room,” Zohar said. “They wanted comfort; we made sure that every detail was meticulously thought out, and we provided them with comfort and functionality while still delivering a beautiful condo.”
