IT’S OUT WITH THE NEW AND IN WITH THE OLD AT MILL VALLEY’S NEWLY BOWED QUARRY HILL ANTIQUES.
The almost 130-year-old Mill Valley Lumber Yard is the perfect setting for exploring the new Quarry Hill Antiques’ vintage decor, antique furnishings, one-of-a-kind pieces and monthly art shows curated by Bettina Stiewe of Upstart Modern. Inspired by the sellers at the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen, a flea market just north of Paris, and antique shops on the East Coast, the store is a curation of years of treasure hunting, and, like many, a new venture courtesy of a pandemic-related pivot. “Antiques have a patina and a story to tell,” says founder Hilary Sessions. “They instantly add warmth and uniqueness to a space,” says the Bay Area design industry vet, who believes that a year of being confined to our homes renewed our love of all things retro—from the Tiffany lamp to crafting, canning and cocooning. What was once considered old-fashioned, we now find comforting and new again. “It’s the thrill of the hunt,” shares Sessions— and we couldn’t agree more.
