THE PRIORITY

Maggie Burns, founder of Maggie Richmond Design, was sought out by a young couple in search of infusing warmth and color to their modern abode. Says Burns, “The home had been recently built before the clients acquired it, so the goal was to leave the main elements intact while infusing the space with design features to make it more functional and warm for this growing family.”

THE DESIGN

When transforming this 6,000-square-foot Soho townhouse, Burns wanted to ensure she designed the home of this couple’s dreams. “We did this by adding custom millwork in many of the rooms, marble surrounds on the existing fi replaces and infusing the home with layers of texture by way of wallpaper, limewash wall treatments and rich fabrics,” she says. “Th e center of the house is divided by a beautiful spiral staircase which serves as a focal point and grounding element throughout the space.”

THE SURPRISES

Like many other interior designers, Burns encountered unforeseen roadblocks in 2020. “The pandemic hit as we were nearing the end of the project, which caused some delays, but we were still able to finish up just before the couple welcomed their daughter into the world,” Burn notes.

THE DETAILS

What makes this home stand out are the changing colors from floor to floor and room to room. “For the living room, we kept the palette of the furnishings neutral and added vibrant pops of red with the curtains in a beautiful rust color and a Russo marble side table by Kelly Wearstler,” explains Burns, who also describes “an elevator, which we wallpapered in an amazing tangerine paper, and an incredibly beautiful green landscape wallpaper in the baby’s room.”

THE OUTCOME

Ultimately, Burns designed the ideal home for the young couple and their newborn daughter. This Soho space is now filled with everything the owners wanted, including a mirror in the dining room, which turns into a TV and a custom Yucca Stuff console in the foyer. Plus, various artworks found in the home are either created or curated by one of the owner’s mothers. “The result perfectly reflects the laid-back and warm nature of the clients,” Burns concludes. “The calming interior and outdoor oasis provide them a perfect escape among the bustling streets of Soho.”
