When renovating or redecorating, it’s not uncommon for homeowners to first focus on the home’s interiors, saving the outdoor spaces for later... or never. But after a many-monthslong lockdown, it’s safe to say that all aspects of the home—inside and outside—deserve equal attention. Yardzen (yardzen.com), a Marin County-based online landscape design platform, helps bring those dreams of a perfect yard to life. “I’ve always loved design and been passionate about creating beautiful, functional spaces, but the inspiration for Yardzen came in 2017, after my family’s historic farmhouse was in the path of the Tubbs Fire,” says co-founder and CEO Allison Messner. “The fire brought so much destruction to our neighborhood, and though our home survived, our yard burned. It was through exploring hiring a landscape architect to help us rebuild our yard that the idea for Yardzen was born.” What started as a yard-only transformation tool—where users submit photos of their yards then receive customized design plans and local contractor recommendations—has grown to now include exterior design, a service that launched late summer. Now, along with ideal yard suggestions, users can see renderings of their home dressed up in new paint, windows, lighting, house numbers and more. “We like to think we’re evolving the industry to the benefit of not just our clients, but the industry itself also,” says Messner. “We’re creating technology that delivers an exceptional design experience to homeowners, and also a platform for talented landscape designers to explore and enjoy a new way of working, that expands what has historically been a hyperlocal industry to a broader geographic surface area.”
