THE CLIENT

When it came to breaking ground on this property, the client envisioned a retreat that offers all the benefits of a South Street Partners development while also providing an added sense of escapism. Not only did there need to be a sense of getting away from reality, but the ideal client should also be searching for a place to host family, friends, or even business-related gatherings. That being said, and keeping with the general surroundings, Cheatham Fletcher Scott, Chris Calloway and their teams got started right away. The goal? Create a stunning retreat that allows the owner to fully immerse themselves in the South Street Partners’ communities’ way of life. The client will be pleased to know the gem is only a short drive from the recently opened Lake Club. There, you will find a multi-purpose facility with state-of-the-art fitness equipment, racquet courts, swimming pools for your laps, an intimate food and beverage outlet serving “high-end” pool food and an event lawn. From inside the home and extending into the community at The Landing, each house, landscape facade and amenity reflects the lifestyle the family wants to create.

THE PRIORITY

When it came to this new build at The Landing at Keowee Springs, the primary objective for Meghan Thigpen and Elizabeth McGee as designer and architect, respectively, was not just to produce another stunning lake home but rather to take advantage of the reason they were building there in the first place: the views. The vision was to have the view, arguably the best in the neighborhood, be the first thing you see when you walk into the house.

THE CHALLENGE

The team designed a heavy timber truss with the help of their structural engineer, extending the bottom chord to cantilever the terrace roof. This design eliminates the need for columns, preserving the incredible views. The house was oriented in such a way that all primary living spaces would have expansive views of the lake. Furthermore, the addition of folding doors in each of these spaces provided full engagement with the outside. Once these problems were resolved, the natural color scheme, natural accents and features came together.

THE DETAILS

“We knew from the beginning that the living room would feature these exquisite trusses. Our intention was for them to stand out independently; we chose not to stain or clear coat, leaving them in their natural state,” says McGee. That sentiment is evident throughout, from the configuration of the rooms, the texture of the custom fabric and the organic material. Custom art by Augusta native Greg Howard invocates the fluid space, and the warm design reflects the natural surroundings. From tree bark-patterned Thibaut wallpaper to the living room patterns that mimic the lake’s ripple, every corner is saturated in inspiration from the landscape. To balance and soften the rich dark green in the home office, they used soft-burlap-like linen and patterned Schumacher fabric for the chairs. As they play with patterns throughout the home, you feel as though you are one with nature in each and every room.

“Throughout the home, a blend of rustic and contemporary styles is evident in the shapes and textures of the furnishings. While the sofa and chairs feature contemporary arm details, they are softened by the use of rustic fabrics. This fusion creates a distinctive charm that resonates throughout the space.” –MEGHAN THIGPEN

THE OUTCOME

Designed to be the perfect lakefront home for weekends away or special family gatherings, the home at 125 Waterfern boasts almost 5,000 square feet of top-of-the-line appliances, a covered deck to enjoy the stunning views rain or shine, and a unique fenestration in the kitchen to allow natural light. On the outside, the home is very clearly a contemporary build; however, within, the team leaned into a rustic flare with exposed natural wood finishes, also found in the charred board material on the exterior that is meant to last a lifetime. When we say take us to the coast, we mean the deck of this home on the serene shores of Lake Keowee.
