Kristin Wadsworth designs a picturesque cottage tucked within the North Carolina Mountains.

THE PROJECT
This outdoorsman’s North Carolina cottage seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor elements, suitable for family fun or long weekends away. Atlanta-based interior designer Kristin Wadsworth meticulously curated a mountainous escape for her client.
THE CHALLENGE
The challenge began after the Pradera Group purchased a 2.1-acre tract of land located in the Wildcat Cliffs Country Club. The subdivided land had to be cleared and leveled to install the basements properly. When it came time to design, Wadsworth intentionally picked out both new and antique furnishings to give the sense that this mountain getaway had been lived in for some time without leaning too far into the cabin theme.

THE INSPIRATION
Her client’s everyday life and interests heavily influenced Wadsworth’s aesthetic direction. She created an inviting, warm, and sophisticated living space. Incorporating natural components such as Tennessee Stone, oak, spruce, queen brink, and fine pine into the building design creates a sense of bringing the outdoors in.

THE DETAILS
As part of her goal was to enhance the natural elements rather than detract from them, Wadsworth leaned toward a harmonious color pallet: rich greens, browns, and grays—paired with textures of velvet, stone, wood, linen, and wool. The designer wanted the space to tell a story, including details of her client’s history. Hunting trophies such as a bear hide and a deer head hang in the den. The second story features a “bear den” or children’s suit with a forest wallcovering, blending perfectly with the highland theme.

THE OUTCOME
The final result is a cozy cottage, inviting and warm, with plenty of natural light to accommodate her client’s modern lifestyle. Combining luxury and livability, this contemporary mountain lodge has all the personal touches of Wadsworth’s nature-loving client.
