Kaufman Segal Design crafts an impressive full-scale reno of a returning client’s Glencoe home.
A custom Prescott table by Ferrell Mittman with Artistic Frame chairs from deAurora covered in Cortina leather and eyepopping Maoming fabric in Tutti Frutti by Pierre Frey make the dining room a wow moment.
THE CLIENT
Having originally hired River North-based interiors firm Kaufman Segal Design to design their 4,800-square-foot Glencoe home in 2007—and having been delighted with the results—the clients knew just who to call 15 years later when it came time to bring the spaces up to date. KSD took to the task once again, with studio principal David Kaufman and senior designer Reneh Valdez heading up the project.
Ralph Lauren’s Julian large pendant lights from Visual Comfort hang handsomely in the kitchen, which also features custom cabinetry by Wood-Mode and Sevilla #2 cement floor tile by Sabine Hill.
THE PRIORITY
Says Kaufman, “The client wanted to clean up and brighten the spaces and make them more functional.” To that end, the KSD team zeroed in on tidying up the home’s architecture. “By removing the heavy ornamentation and traditional aspects of the home,” adds Valdez, “we were able to obtain brighter spaces and transition the function of the home for a large family.”
Maya Romanoff’s Ajiro Vineyard wood veneer in Driftwood makes the family room sing.
THE CHALLENGE
Renovating during the pandemic proved to present the most obstacles due to long lead times for various materials and product. One other wrinkle? Because the client wanted to live in the home during construction, the project needed to be completed in three phases: lower level first, main level next and second floor last.
The inviting office boasts Maya Romanoff grey fleece wallcovering, a Ralph Lauren Riley ring chandelier from Visual Comfort and rug by Surya.
THE DETAIL
“The lower level was a major transformation,” Kaufman notes. “It went from being an unused space with little furniture to a moody space that features an aquarium for their growing collection of fish. Now it’s the perfect space for this large family, and they can host a large group of friends.”
Phillip Jeffries’ Haven wallpaper in Eden Enchanted and a custom chaise covered in Holland & Sherry Glam Bouclé fabric in Shortcake make for an inviting nook in the primary bedroom.
THE OUTCOME
Simply put, says Valdez, “The client loves the results beyond belief—she has regularly called us to tell us she lives in the most beautiful home.”
The primary bath enchants with Artistic Tile’s Orchid dimensional bianco Carrara mosaic tile.
Midas pendants by Fisher Weisman from Holland & Sherry hang over custom nightstands with custom Katonah hardware.
