When Karla Morris of Karla Morris Designs and Erin Deombeleg of Charlotte Hill Interiors took on this Buckhead property, they had their work cut out for them. The home’s priceless 1926 Neel Reid and Philip Shutze architecture architecture meant the interiors would need to complement 90-year-old design while remaining modern. “We pushed the envelope with contemporary fabrics and accents while holding true to traditional furniture and window treatment structures to interact with Neel Reid’s design,” say Morris and Deombeleg. And they certainly made the right choice.

Contemporary notes were added to the interiors, but the traditional design remained intact.

The interiors of this 9,958-square-foot home were inspired by Santa Monica, Calif.’s casual elegance and 432 Park Avenue condominiums in New York City, which is known for its residences’ transitional decor. This marriage of modern and traditional elements enhances the home’s classic architecture, as seen in the custom-designed pool cabana. The cabana’s open walls allow full viewing of the gardens designed by Philip Trammell Shutze and Reid, bordered only by a fireplace and ironwork designed by Angelo Viale of Ironworks International, reminiscent of Viale’s hometown of Catania, Italy.

Even with over 3 acres of breathtaking outdoor spaces, Morris still favors the master suite above all. The master bath’s white Statuario Carrara Italian marble floors, limestone walls, oversize steam shower, and his and hers water closets are certainly striking, not to mention the view of the sprawling front lawn. Deombeleg, however, loves the kitchen and nearby sun porch. Architect Norman Davenport Askins and Design Galleria’s Matthew Quinn collaborated with Deombeleg to create the space, and they made no compromises. Appliances include a La Cornue range, a sous vide oven and a stainless steel hood that spans the length of the steel countertops. The space then seamlessly melds into the sun porch via the entire wall of French doors folding open, creating a large common space perfect for entertaining. The sun porch’s floor-to-ceiling windows bring the gardens inside the home while also giving a view of a copper tree fountain, the guesthouse, tennis court, basketball court and sports lawn.
