Artistic fixtures and comfortable furnishings unite to create a modern yet cozy space of a Tribeca loft.
The RH sectional sets an inviting tone in the living room.
Deciphering a client's taste and merging it with one’s own aesthetic is a common challenge for interior designers. Recreating the appearance of a Tribeca loft, however, came easy for Amy Kalikow, who already knew she had much in common with the spacious abode’s residents.
The kitchen features a pristine color palette.
“I have known the homeowners for many years,” she says. “We share the same idea of family and home as we both have four children.” For Kalikow, it was important to achieve a dwelling suited for friendly gatherings and the business meetings of a music executive patriarch.

She describes the interior as clean, modern and minimal, though visitors will also find that there’s a sense of warmth brought forth by the cushy seating and soft textures throughout. Inside the apartment also resides an airiness largely thanks to its substantial windows and lightly colored walls, both a mainstay in every room but the office, whose monochromatic black elements exude a stark sophistication.
The home office’s dark colors stand out from the rest of the space’s subdued hues.
Despite the loft’s largely cohesive layout, artistic pieces create contrast among the rooms. In the living area, a custom-size Blaxsand coffee table fashioned from stacked tree rounds acts as an obvious focal point, its steely modernism offset by an inviting wraparound sectional from RH. Kalikow also utilized lighting as a way to bring eccentricity to the home. A sculptural Gabriel Scott chandelier makes a statement in the dining room—the asymmetrical configuration hangs above a custom Robert James dining table with a twisted cast stone base. Nearby, Apparatus Studio’s trendy Arrow pendants sit suspended in the office.
The clients opened up their apartment during a renovation so each of their kids would get his or her own room and, consequently, his or her own tone-setting light fixture. From an impressive Jamie Dietrich feather chandelier to a glass bubble fixture and low-hanging bell jar pendants from Niche, gloomy spaces are an issue of the past.

Although the final product was a success for Kalikow, reaching the endpoint came with a few obstacles. “We had to haul the tiles, piano and dining table through the window and close down the street,” she says. “They were just too big to fit in the elevator.” Those oversized tiles now outfit almost every room, in many spots topped by plush rugs.
Ultimately, Kalikow was able to draw from her personal relationship with the family and extensive design expertise to produce a stylish residence and fulfill her clients’ needs. “They are thrilled with the outcome,” she says. “Their trust in my vision was appreciated throughout the process.”
