Designer Hilary Matt crafts a wonderfully exciting abode for a family trading their city digs for a suburban home.
“We went very eclectic and tried to have every space be a mix of their style and my own design aesthetic,” Matt says.
THE PROJECT
When a family from the city decided it was time to trade their urban apartment for a luxe, sprawling home in Manhasset, interior designer Hilary Matt of Hilary Matt Interiors was called on to work her magic on their new space out East.

The clients have a distinct style and a love for color. They wanted a space that was comfortable and family friendly, but also fit for entertaining guests.

THE PROCESS
Matt focused on layering design throughout the home, beginning with the wallcoverings, then slowly expanding throughout the space by adding in additional textures.

“We went through the house and pinpointed which areas we wanted to be ‘bold’ and ‘wow’ spaces, and then which spaces we wanted to be more neutral and calming,” she says. “This really helped us choose the direction of each space and have a goal for the feeling of each one.”
In the living room, artwork by Bradley Duncan hangs above a custom sofa and a rug from Fayette.
THE CHALLENGE
Transforming the home from its traditionalism to an elegant interior that matched the client’s personal taste was a challenge, but it was doable. “We didn’t want to strip it of its charm, so we needed to find the best way to mix and match those elements into the decor,” says Matt. “I wanted this space to reflect them and their personal style. I think this was really successful. I see the clients and their personality in every inch of this house.”

THE INSPIRATION
The homeowners’ personal style was a major inspiration. “Overall, the space is an inviting and sophisticated one, but still feels young at heart,” says Matt. “Like the formal dining room, it is the perfect mix of aesthetics and style. You have the traditional de Gournay wallpaper but in a bold, unconventional color that is exciting.”

THE OUTCOME
Matt crafted a stunning home that perfectly reflects the clients’ sophisticated style. Each wallcovering, for example, gives the home character that reflects the residents. And overall, a mix of traditional elements with modern, chic layers makes this Manhasset home wonderfully unique.
