The iconic textile studio has opened its first design studio in San Francisco.
For the first time in four decades, iconic L.A.-based wallpaper and textiles company CW Stockwell is opening a showroom—in San Francisco. After a long stretch on Melrose Avenue, Rose Tarlow Melrose House has relocated to a brand-new space on Robertson. “I wanted the shop to look like a contemporary farmhouse and was inspired by an old structure in a garden designed by Jinny Blom,” says legendary designer Rose Tarlow about the 7,000-square-foot Marc Appleton-designed building. Inside, visitors can find her timeless furniture and accessories, including the L-shaped Achilles bench and the graphic Ollie floor lamp, both crafted from walnut. “We never thought when we started Jean de Merry that we would last so long or that we’d evolve the way our business did,” says Christian Darnaud-Maroselli, co-founder of the brand. What began as a continuation of co-founder Jean de Merry’s four-generationslong leather tanning family business has evolved into one of L.A.’s go-tos for timeless, French deco-inspired design. Although the brand has Gallic origins, it is deeply rooted in the City of Angels. “Living in Los Angeles allowed us to find and work with so many artisans all over the city,” says Darnaud-Maroselli. “Their knowledge and dedication have provided us with many ideas as to what to do next throughout these past years.” To celebrate two decades, the brand is launching a new collection, MMXXI CHI.I. “We were inspired by the tradition of craftsmanship, and the collection aims to reimagine pieces made from age-old techniques [introduced] through new modern designs and forms,” Darnaud-Maroselli explains. “We are trying to find ways to play with new and old materials, and I hope it shows in MMXXI CH.I.” jeandemerry.com–LEJ

Not one, but two new showrooms have opened at SOCO, bringing more excellent design to Orange County. First up is Poggenpohl (poggenpohl.com), the heritage German kitchen company known for its sleek sensibility. “The design of our store is minimalist, modern and sophisticated,” says Stephanie Duval of Poggenpohl Orange County, who notes the new customizable bar cabinet as a standout item. “Every Poggenpohl kitchen is a bespoke creation, designed and built to meet the specific needs of each individual customer.” Next is luxury mattress and bedding retailer H. Alora (h-alora.com). “This is going to be a contemporary showroom with a wide range of different styles,” says CEO Ronnie Lane Jr. “Customers will have the ability to custom design a one-of-a-kind bed by selecting from over 70 fabrics, 10 different leg options and different headboards.” Look out for a second location in San Diego County in 2021. –LEJ

Premium decor without premium prices—that’s the mantra of designer Luis Mayser, who recently opened his first luxury furniture showroom, aptly named Premium Decor, in Pacific Beach. Mayser draws upon more than two decades of experience to create custom mattresses, sofas and sectionals, utilizing locally sourced materials in an effort to lower the company’s carbon footprint. “Our furniture is designed with staying power in mind, meaning that it won’t end up in a landfill a couple of years down the road,” says Mayser. After choosing a frame, fill and fabric, shoppers can expect to enjoy their elegant new sectional or sofa in less than half of the delivery time of its big-name competitors. A look inside the new Los Angeles design gallery.
“I’ve always loved the architecture and interiors history of Southern California, and felt it would be a great backdrop for works I show through my gallery,” says Andy Goldsborough, founder and gallery director of The Gilded Owl, a design-focused gallery that recently debuted next door to Nickey Kehoe on Beverly Boulevard. Goldsborough—who recently moved to L.A. from Hudson, N.Y., where he ran the first Gilded Owl—is showing a mix of impeccably crafted vintage furniture, the entire Levaggi line of chairs from Chiavari, Italy (shown exclusively by Goldsborough), a collaborative series of tables with Charlap Hyman & Herrero and more. A retrospective of Clarence House director Kazumi Yoshida’s work and a wallpaper collaboration are on deck for the future. “I believe The Gilded Owl offers a missing point of view in the design gallery scene in L.A.,” says Goldsborough, “while also having a complementary relationship with what is out there outside of us.” thegildedowl.com–LEJ
Santa Ynez General is bowing a second location this fall

After their first location received an exceptionally warm reception, Pearson and Spencer Turnbull have opened another outpost of Santa Ynez General. “We wanted to be able to give our clients more of what they loved about our store, and to do that we needed a bigger space,” says Spencer. “Our second location doubles the size of the original store, giving us room to introduce more emerging brands and interesting makers, which really drive the sense of discovery that our clients experience when they visit.” While the original shop now carries apparel, shoes and accessories, the new location houses furniture, lighting and decor from both local and European brands, with exclusive items from California makers such as L.A.’ Style Union Home ceramics and Atelier Saucier napkins, and Oakland’s Mi Cocina kitchen wares. Since 2008, when the first Anthem store opened in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood, Janelle and Kirk Loevner have continued to bring stylish design to the Bay Area. Good Together House in Laguna Beach offers unique home goods and design services

Strolling through Laguna Beach is always a good idea, and now there’s yet another reason to linger. Good Together House, a beautifully curated shop filled with handcrafted local items, recently opened its door. Founded by Dana Marron (previously vice president of design for Roxy/Quiksilver and creator of clothing brand Laguna Supply) and Kristin Winter (half the team behind Brass Tack, a U.S.-made, fair trade and vintage home store), the shop offers a thoughtful mix of clothing, jewelry, beauty and decor—including Bzippy ceramics, Manufacture de Digoin serving- and bakeware, World War II vintage army pants reworked by Gunner + Strut and more—all displayed in corresponding areas. “Part of the reason we used the word house in the name is to create environments: clothing’s in the closet area; wellness and beauty is in the vanity/bath area; glassware/kitchen supplies in the kitchen, etc.,” Marron explains. “We want you to feel right at home, like you’re walking into a dinner party with your friends—come and just hang out.” goodtogetherhouse.com–LEJ
