Natural materials, clean lines and light linens bring a Belgian-inspired aesthetic to a Jupiter residence with classic modern Mediterranean architecture.

THE FEEL
Situated on an inlet of the Indian River within an Intracoastal community in Jupiter, this home’s waterfront location and dock access lured a pair of New Yorkers right to its doorstep. The property seemed tailor-made for the client’s boat, and the infinityedge pool conjured the vacation vibes the couple was searching for. It just needed some love on the interiors to create the quintessential environment where they could relax, fish, and entertain family and friends on seasonal getaways and truly feel at home yearround. They enlisted Elyse Petrella of New York-based Elyse Petrella Interiors (elysepetrellainteriors.com) to create a warm, inviting space that answered the call. “I was inspired by the Mediterranean- Revival architecture along Florida’s southern coast,” Petrella says. “The house has a Mediterranean influence with a stucco exterior and decorative corbels along the roofline. I wanted to incorporate classic Belgian details on the interior but with a modern sensibility for the active family.”

Benjamin Moore’s White Dove paint washes over the interiors, establishing a light, airy canvas for Petrella to infuse a neutral yet textured and layered palette throughout. The Belgian aesthetic can be felt in all areas of the home, starting with the living room sofa—dressed in performance natural linen—whose arms slope in a European silhouette. A curvaceous coff ee table carved out of silver travertine adds a sculptural element, grounded by a sisal area rug. Woven barstools in the kitchen feature an ebony hue that speaks to the dark dining table and existing floors. “I wanted the interior to feel tailored yet relaxed, so there is a nice mix of natural materials at play,” Petrella says.

THE SCOPE
The home already had good bones. So the designer kept most details in place, making a handful of modifications with the help of Island Contracting & Remodeling (islandcontractingfl.com). “I find design to be the most successful when the interiors respect the architecture of the home,” Petrella says. “It’s important for the interior and exterior to speak the same language.” A heavy fireplace made way for a lighter reclaimed wood credenza in the living room, and a tub niche was removed to allow natural light to flood the primary bathroom. The dark wood floors remained, off ering a rich contrast and depth that read sophisticated and grounding.

The creamy paint palette and light linens darken to a soft blue-gray grasscloth wallcovering in the primary bedroom, where a four-poster bed provides a serene retreat.
THE OUTCOME
Ultimately, the designer created precisely the right mix of style, comfort, and welcoming repose that the owners were looking for—a warm and inviting space where they could entertain, feel calm, and relax while enjoying vacation all year long. “My design philosophy,” Petrella says, “is seen throughout the use of natural materials, clean lines and classic details”—with a bubble chandelier in the entry and a hanging chair in the lounge for good measure.
