A 1900s family home gets a sophisticated makeover courtesy of Donna Mondi Interior Design.
Highlights of the living room include a chic Hermosa coffee table by Amorph; vintage Kagan sofa in navy mohair fabric; Button chairs by Julian Chichester; the clients’ series of blue Pouffe sculptures above the fireplace by Amber Marshall Glass; and, flanking the fireplace, a pair of photographs from the “Des Monstres” series by Flóra Borsi, also the clients’.
When it comes to redesigning a home, it doesn’t take a top-to-bottom renovation to achieve seriously dramatic results. Case in point: A stunning recent project in the heart of Lakeview by Donna Mondi Interior Design. “The clients reached out to us to help them achieve a more custom home feel without renovating,” notes Mondi, who worked with lead designer Sara Hampton to transform the middle-of-the-road abode into a personality-filled oasis for a busy family.
Apparatus Studio’s Cloud chandelier adds an ethereal touch to the dining room.
Mondi’s team created a moment in the foyer courtesy of an églomise mirror by John-Richard flanked by a pair of works by Andrea Pavan and the Felix bench by Julian Chichester.
Brushed bronze cabinet pulls from Studio41 contrast strikingly with Benjamin Moore’s Cheating Heart paint color in the butler’s pantry.
Explains Mondi, “We reviewed the existing finishes for the main level and primary suite and determined ways to improve the designs with minimally invasive solutions. The kitchen finishes were nice but bland; the butler’s pantry needed to make more of a statement; and the family room fireplace and surrounding cabinetry wasn’t special enough to be a strong focal point. They needed furnishings throughout with the exception of a legacy dining table and chairs from Baker that had been passed down from two generations before.”
Inviting counter stools by Thomas Hayes Studio add a soft touch to the sleek kitchen.
Given that the clients were both working from home throughout the process, Mondi’s main obstacle was to maximize impact while minimizing intrusion. In response, Mondi’s team flexed their creativity in room after room, from the butler’s pantry (by adding reeded glass panels, a new faucet and updated hardware and painting the room a high-gloss dark pewter) to the primary suite (by incorporating a wood veneer wall covering with wall-to-wall draperies behind their existing linen bed and adding new dropped-pendant sconces, rich wood bedside tables and custom bedding) and beyond.
The family room features a custom Lumifer cocktail ottoman/table covered in ginger leather from Keleen Leathers, plus one of the project’s pièces de résistance: a showstopping custom fireplace that runs the full height of the wall designed by Donna Mondi Interior Design and fabricated by Material Bespoke Stone Tile.
Primary bedroom highlights include Kravet nightstands and Phillip Jeffries’ deco hemp wallcovering in Deco Silver Tea.
A slender side table from Global Views completes the serene scene in the primary bath.
For a family home, a fireplace can often be a magnetic gathering point, which is exactly what Mondi and team aimed to create in this project. “We have a fireplace collection with Material Bespoke Stone + Tile,” she explaines, “and we were able to modify one of our profiles to accommodate a linear fireplace and run the full height of the wall. It was also the most challenging to retrofit in with the existing cabinetry and took much planning in the execution phase. Rather than waste the existing built-ins that were quite ordinary, we papered the back with a veneer wallcovering to bring in the richness of wood, added millwork to connect all the elements together, and painted the cabinets in a tone that complements the stone.”
In the dining room, a Corbin Bronze sculpture from the clients’ collection is complemented by various vintage pieces and accessories from Artemest and Made Goods, all artfully placed on shelves by Arteriors.
Sums up Mondi of the clients’ reaction to the finished project, “They have a home they can be proud of that reflects their own personal styles and is very livable for their young family. The furniture layouts maximize the function of all the spaces from the time you enter the home. And with the minimal demolition we had, they were able to live and work in the home during the entire process.”
