DISC Interiors ushers new life and a soulful spirit into a client’s beloved Calabasas home.
A peek into the listening room reveals a beautiful blend of pieces, including Vladimir Kagan’s Shorty sofa, the Benjamin club chair by Studio Van Den Akker, a vintage midcentury walnut armchair by John Stuart and tables by Helene Aumont, Robert James and Casamidy. Comfortably Numb by Peter Halasz hangs above the fireplace.
THE HOMEOWNERS
After living in their Calabasas home for more than 20 years, Lynette and Mark Sikand craved a change. It was important to Lynette, an interior designer herself, and her husband Mark, owner of Island Engineering, that the home’s original materials and innate character shine through, especially given its history and significance. Not only did Lynette’s good friend Teresa grow up in the house, it was also featured prominently in '70s-era design magazines due to its authentic Spanish design. “My girlfriend Teresa and her husband Brian were married here—their names are carved in our trees from the early ‘80s,” she explains.
With a mix of handmade and vintage items, the entryway sets the tone for the entire home.
THE TEAM
“Given the history, it was extremely important that we find the right designers to work with and represent the house,” says Lynette. “Something DISC Interiors posted on social media caught my eye. It was a beautiful Spanish home that showed great restraint and focus on the architecture. It wasn’t overly designed; it was perfectly layered with vintage and current furnishings and current art.” After a successful first meeting at the house, the Sikands enlisted DISC’s David Dick and Krista Schrock to help bring their vision to life.
Portola’s Meritage paint coats the home office, which houses custom millwork by DISC, the Buffa lounge chair from Coup Studio and lighting from Rose Uniacke and Rose Tarlow.
THE PROJECT
The home was already beautiful, so initially, the DISC team was brought in to help update the look and feel without making major changes. “It was mostly decorating, changing out lighting… for the most part, we came in to help make everything feel a bit more cohesive and fresh,” says Schrock, who notes that a kitchen remodel was the impetus for the project. “We wanted to make the kitchen more streamlined and functional because they cook and entertain a lot,” she explains. “That was the main thing that spawned the rest of the project.”
Kerstin Hörlin- Holmquist’s Paradise sofa in Rose Uniacke’s Hazel cotton velvet makes a striking statement. Afghan (2021) by Julie Blackmon draws the eye in.
THE GOALS
The clients craved a home that worked for them at this stage in their lives: after their kids moved out and post-pandemic. Creating balance while preserving the house’s original materials was essential. “That’s what we’re always striving for,” Schrock explains, noting that they aimed to refine the home without watering down its true essence. Mark, an avid music lover, wanted a room dedicated to listening to records. The couple also craved a bar area for relaxing and entertaining friends and family.
DISC paired the client’s own table with a custom banquette and Rose Tarlow’s Bee dining chair in the breakfast nook.
THE PLAN
To brighten the overall look, DISC chose to paint much of the home in Benjamin Moore’s China White hue and worked with Bay Shades to update the window coverings. Most of the flooring and some of the homeowner’s furniture remained, such as the dining room table, the guest bedroom bed and more, but new additions—a mix of vintage and new furniture, unique artwork and new wood beams in certain areas—were implemented seamlessly. To hone in on the home’s Spanish character, DISC sourced several pieces from San Miguel de Allende-based Casamidy. “Bringing in some more tactile materials or surfaces helped to balance what’s streamlined,” Schrock notes.
The silver leaf two-panel screen, circa 1970, was sourced at Galerie Half; the homeowners enjoy eating and playing games in the bar area, which features a Robert James table, RH chairs and sconces from Vintage Remains Lighting. The painting is by Doug Whitfield.
THE KITCHEN
The kitchen layout was perfect as is, so DISC updated the space with new cabinetry, new countertops, a new hood, bronze hardware, new tile and pendant lights from Casamidy. The java-loving clients also got their dream coffee nook.
Earthy tones and textures bring warmth to the kitchen, where a Casamidy pendant and a mix of tiles from Country Floors, Stone-Mart and Cle reside. The barstools are by DWR and hardware is from Sun Valley Bronze.
THE LISTENING ROOM
“The living room turned into the listening room where there’s a whole crazy record and speaker set-up,” Schrock shares. DISC kept the existing wood detailing and beams intact, and added new furnishings and decor, including the Shorty sofa by Vladimir Kagan, a vintage rug from Marc Phillips and accent chairs by Studio Van Den Akker and John Stuart. “By day, it is a beautiful custom-furnished room where the light streams in and the garden is on full view from every angle,” says Lynette. “At night, it becomes a moody and soulful space.”
The refreshed primary bedroom features Una Malan’s Belsize four-poster bed, custom nightstands by DISC Interiors and a rare midcentury armchair by John Stuart Blend Interiors. New wood beams in a pale tone helped lighten things up in a once-dark space.
THE PRIMARY BEDROOM & LANDING
“They had a lot of heavy wood furniture in here,” says Schrock, who notes that a new four poster bed from Una Malan added height and new beams helped freshen things up. Custom nightstands, a vintage chair and textured fabric bedding from Pat McGann add contrast and depth. Just outside the bedroom is the landing, that DISC converted into a layered, comfortable space for reading with a mix of new and old pieces. “It’s so cozy and comfy,” says Schrock. “You can hang out there all day.”
Located just outside the primary bedroom, the landing is a space for the homeowners to read and relax. A Gregorius Pineo Durpe chaise pairs with a Julian Chichester side table and a Marc Phillips rug on one side of the space.
THE OFFICE
The all-new office—which also serves as a lounge—shines in Portola’s Meritage shade and incorporates a shapely sofa from Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist and Rose Uniacke’s Spot lights. ”We did built-ins, since they wanted to have everything put away,” shares Schrock.
The other side of the room houses a vintage Chambron chair and an RH dresser topped with a vintage lamp from Lucca Antiques. The striking photography is by Renee Torres from Mojave Art.
THE OUTCOME
Besides a strong friendship, the Sikands and the DISC team got so much out of this project, which took about 8 months to complete. “Their goal was always to work with the original materials of the house,” shares Lynette. “They blended the new materials in seamlessly. Nothing was designed or purchased based on trends, everything was thoughtfully sourced to bring out the home’s original beauty,” she adds. “What a privilege and pleasure it has been working with with both Krista and David on this very personal journey.”
