Two kitchens are better than one in this Paradise Valley haven.

“If the kitchen is the heart of the home, this home has an abundance of heart: two, in fact!” says interior designer Katherine Taratsas. When Rossland Investment Group asked Taratsas and project designer Jaci Tino at Katie Bowe Design to envision this all-important space, however, it was a bit of a Tin Man situation as the 7,800-square-foot home was being built on spec. The design team, including Candelaria Design, started by picturing hypothetical homeowners: a family with three children or active empty nesters who love to entertain and host. Both scenarios, according to Taratasas, called for an elegant show kitchen with generous serving areas paired with a highly functional working kitchen.

To establish an overarching palette, Taratsas says she “imagined a sun-soaked Mediterranean villa with modern sensibilities.” For the outward-facing kitchen, that translated to bleached oak cabinets, Taj Mahal quartzite on the island and natural plaster on the gas range backsplash and integrated hood. The working kitchen, which she designed to convey “warmth and quietude,” features deep-toned cabinetry, soapstone quartz on a sculptural island and mineral-colored zellige tile. It possesses all the necessary accouterments plus a walk-in refrigerator, and is accessible only through a cleverly concealed door.

Both spaces combine to create an award-winning combination of practicality and panache. “The home is flooded with natural light, and yet the materials and details lend a richness,” she says. “The use of perimeter oak cabinetry, plaster, stone and sand-cast bronze hardware grounds the space for a timeless feel. I can imagine both the morning coffees and glamorous dusk entertaining with the outline of Mummy Mountain from this kitchen.”
