WINNERS: THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE, FLO DESIGN + CONSTRUCTION

Hiding in plain sight, this two-bedroom ADU is still quite a standout.

Set against the backdrop of Camelback Mountain is this stunning residence and ADU. The board-formed cast-in-place concrete walls and rooftop garden help define the entry sequence to the main home.

As is evidenced by this two-bedroom, two-bathroom gem facing Mummy Mountain, long gone are the days of casitas amounting to little more than an afterthought. This secluded ADU serves, instead, to extend the contemporary-meets-industrial splendor of the main house into new territory. “As it is situated on a hillside lot in Paradise Valley, the design team wanted to create a strong base to elevate the main living spaces to take advantage of northern views across the valley,” Andy Byrnes, president and owner of The Construction Zone, explains. “This decision gave ample privacy to the lower level, where the guesthouse is located.”

A versatile common space blends a kitchenette, workspace and lounge seating that opens to a shaded patio, offering guests a seamless transition to the beautiful native desert landscape.

When guests approach from the main drive, they likely cannot discern the guest wing, which mirrors the main residence’s architectural features and materiality. “The exterior walls are cast-in-place concrete, with a coarse board-formed texture on the outside, accentuated by the sun, and a smooth formed finish on the inside. The steel structure, concrete slab and metal roof deck are left exposed, contributing to the rawness of the space,” Byrnes says. A walk around the landscaped path to the back of the house reveals a shaded portico with a glass facade leading to twin guest suites and a shared kitchenette amid 1,000 square feet.

The serene en suite features custom oak millwork complemented by sleek dark tile and bespoke steel accents.

Inside, natural white oak wall treatments and dark porcelain tile and concrete floors provide a polish that contrasts with the earthy exterior. A multifunctional common space combines a kitchenette, desk and lounge-style seating, while each bedroom has a unique custom-built bed and headboard seamlessly integrated with a Rimadesio closet system. Every space opens to an outdoor living area shaded by a large custom steel trellis. And the cactus garden-adorned rooftop blends harmoniously with the natural surroundings.

Not surprisingly, The Construction Zone’s creation is a resounding success. “Our clients are a happily married couple with a deep appreciation for family life,” Byrnes shares. “With their grown-up children living independently, they envisioned a resortlike, spacious and welcoming home that comfortably accommodates their children and grandchildren. They were so enamored with the original casita they commissioned us to design and build a second casita on the property for their ever-growing family.”
