How did you start the business? MH: My father, Fred E. Hires Sr. and partners started a cultured marble company in 1970. My brother, Sonny Hires and I grew up working in the business. In 1996, Sonny and I had the opportunity to purchase my father’s partners portion of the business. Following this purchase, we engaged on a plan to offer complimentary synergistic after paint building products focused on the single-family market. Cultured Marble was strictly a bathroom product. We evolved into kitchen countertops, glass & mirror, shower doors, tile & flooring etc. Eventually, through a series of acquisitions, mergers and green fielding we came to add appliances, garage doors, fireplaces, lighting and stone slab distribution. In addition, we expanded into the multi-family and commercial construction arena. Today, Construction Resources has 30 locations including showrooms, slab galleries, distribution centers and manufacturing and fabrication locations operating in 5 southeastern states. Our success can be attributed to great partners, employees, customer relationships and vendors we have at Construction Resources.

What are some values in this business that find paramount? MH: Across Construction Resources, in all product categories and divisions you will find a prevailing entrepreneurial spirit focused on servicing the needs of the customer. For 52 years, this theme has resonated across Construction Resources and its employee base. Our employees and deep customer relationships are our most valuable asset, and they will remain our focus as we move forward with our growth plan over the coming years.
