Whitney Durham tackles a Peachtree Hills home and proves that purposeful use of color can create an electric yet timeless masterpiece.

Caroline and Kyle Garcia knew it was time for a refresh on their craftsman bungalow in Peachtree Hills that had been in the family since Kyle’s grandparents. “We wanted to build a home we’d grow into with our family in a neighborhood we love,” says Caroline, who was pregnant at the time of the renovation. The pair decided a teardown and rebuild was necessary, and went to work designing their own ideal floor plan and bringing in Whitney Durham of Whitney Durham Interiors to capture their dream. “Like so many things today, I discovered Whitney on Instagram years before we built our house. After following dozens of accounts, I knew Whitney would be the perfect match for our project,” says Caroline. “She isn’t afraid to be bold and use color, and I loved her transitional yet eclectic style. She was willing to listen to the visions I had in my head, and best of all, she’s a blast to work with! We had fun blending our ideas, and she often took mine and made them better.”

It was evident that the young couple wanted a transitional, modern home with clean, crisp lines and space without losing the character of the old bungalow. A vehicle for this can be found in the purposeful and electric pops of color, which are Durham’s bread and butter. “The client loves color, especially various shades of blues, greens with pops of pink,” says the designer. “While incorporating layers of color throughout, we kept the walls a good neutral to have a place to rest the eye.” Durham also worked with the client to instill moments of personalization and heart. “[The Garcias] have a family history and love of sailing and sailboats, so we also incorporated some nautical touches throughout the home in relation to shades of blues and whites, rattan and raffi a-wrapped furniture, along with a commissioned sailboat painting in their son’s room.” Also in the foyer, three black-and-white photos of where Kyle and Caroline met (Fenwick Island, Del.), fell in love (Santa Monica, Calif.) and got married (Rosemary Beach, Fla.). This home’s transitional style and punchy accents perfectly summarize the Garcias’ clean style without sacrificing the heart of a well-appointed home.
