THE VISION
The alfresco dining area out on the loggia says it all. Tami Ramsay, partner and principal designer of Cloth & Kind (clothandkind.com), discovered vintage Pan Am bucket-seat chairs on 1stdibs, had them sandblasted and powder coated in a crisp, bright white, and upholstered the cushions in Doug and Gene Meyer’s Honeycomb outdoor fabric in a tropical blue-and-white Capri colorway. This retelling of pieces with previous lives and giving them a sense of place with pops of pizazz drove the design approach for a house in Wellington for two equestrians with an eye for design and a penchant for color and whimsy. “The design inspiration pulls from a sunny Florida vibe but not in the standard Palm Beach punchy look,” Ramsay says. “Our clients embrace color and pattern, especially in the blue, teal and green palette, but they are also grounded in natural woods, vintage collectible pieces, and art.”

Together with partner Krista Nye Nicholas, the design duo reimagined the home into an interior and outdoor living oasis full of personality that befits the clients, their young children, and even their dogs. Nothing is too precious, and everything is lived in and enjoyed.
The designers appointed a custom two-sided sofa in the living room, which features two conversation areas. It’s joined by vintage chairs re-dressed in colorful fabrics for a fresh and lively update. Photographed by Robert Peterson
“They prefer to live in spaces that imbue a sense of happiness and chic playfulness,” says Ramsay, noting she and Nicholas have worked on several projects with these clients before. “Our goal was to make an interesting, happy and bright home while creating something sophisticated and family-oriented. The idea was to make it happy and colorful without being cheeky or trying too hard.” The antique pedigree of select furniture and lighting brings gravitas to pattern and color throughout each space.

THE SOLUTIONS
The house, overlooking a golf course and lake and located near a horse farm and equestrian training facility, had been renovated before the owners purchased it. And a few design solutions were needed to make it function better for the family’s lifestyle. And so, in addition to the vintage finds the designers peppered into the home, they also integrated custom pieces that speak to both form and function. “The living room is a double-sided seating area and is the first room you see after entering the foyer,” says Ramsay. “The previous owners made two rooms into one large room, and the design and decoration required careful planning to make it largely functional and utilize all of the space. We designed a wall-towall custom built-in feature to house a collection of art and objects, some within the clients’ personal collection and much of which we sourced for the project. We designed a low-slung serpentine double-sided sofa to create two distinct yet connected seating areas and flanked the sofa with vintage chairs reupholstered in fresh patterns and colorful fabrics.”

Working closely with Richie Kronshage of Yellowfin Builders (yellowfinbuilders.com), the customized renovation also saw a redesign of the family room, including two sliding glass steel doors that lead out to the newly designed and built pool, outdoor seating and dining area, and outdoor kitchen.
THE ART
Color inspiration came mainly from the art: a bright yellow Katie Leede linen on a midcentury modern bench in the foyer complements a canvas from Gillian Bryce Gallery; a Rebecca Atwood fabric on a vintage chair in the living room takes cues from the painting over the fireplace; and the nature-inspired palette in a guest bedroom references the gradient landscape painting above the bed.

And while the owners had acquired several pieces of collectible original art through their relationship with David Lusk Gallery, their appreciation for whimsy and all forms of creativity allowed Ramsay to instill one more reminder of the potency of fun and the power of the mix: a custom metal art piece arranged over a console in the exterior front entryway, held up by stationary countersunk magnets so the family can rearrange the art pieces on a whim.
