THE PROJECT
A Chevy Chase couple with three children, ages 16 to 22, loved their 5,985-squarefoot home designed by Anne Decker Architects (anndeckerarchitects.com) and built by Zantzinger & Associates (zantzingerbuilt.com) in 2012. It had great details and trimmings but needed a definitive style that reflected their taste and busy lifestyle.

THE TEAM
The couple tapped Katy Anderson, founder and principal at Katy Anderson Interiors (katyandersoninteriors.com), for the ambitious project that covered the living and dining rooms, family room with breakfast table, butler’s pantry, powder room and kitchen. Anderson often takes a fresh, modern approach to traditional decor. “Our aesthetic is never too trendy. We want our projects to outlast trends so that our clients can enjoy living in their beautiful spaces for years to come,” she says.

The designer says her team approaches each project with a careful examination of their clients’ lifestyles. “The first question we always ask ourselves and our clients is, “How can we make your home a unique reflection of your family’s taste and individual lifestyles?’ We are also driven by considering our client’s comfort and joy in their homes. When they return from travel, work and school, we want them excited and happy to be home.”

THE GOALS
Anderson says the couple wanted to bring color and a little less formality to the home while maintaining a sophisticated, slightly modern take. “Our clients enjoy entertaining, and their goal was to create an environment where the family could enjoy easy living and be ready for guests. They don’t need to spruce up their decor just to entertain, as our approach was multipurpose.”

Since the couple also owns three dogs, Anderson says her team selected stainresistant, luxurious fabrics. “We also embraced our client’s love for color and appreciation for mixing in old and new pieces. We also use a lot of custom paint colors to pull out accents in textiles and other aspects in all of our projects.”

LIVING ROOM
The couple didn’t want a traditional look for this space and instead embraced the idea of a lounge. “We went with moody colors and draperies by Glenmar Draperies ([glenmardraperies.com](http://glenmardraperies.com)), a high-gloss ceiling and color matched the grasscloth wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries (phillipjeffries.com), adding armless lounge chairs in luxurious velvet,” says Anderson. The eclectic, glass-top coffee table from Made Goods (madegoods.com) fits perfectly into a relaxed, vibrant vibe. We kept their existing sofa and added custom pillows with fabrics from Pindler (pindler.com) and Schumacher (schumacher.com) to coordinate with the mix of furniture.”

The room’s standout pieces include chairs from Century Furniture (centuryfurniture.com) covered in Kravet (kravet.com) fabric, side tables from Woodbridge Furniture (woodbridgefurniture.com) and lighting from Visual Comfort (visualcomfort.com). Rugs from C.G. Coe & Son (coecarpetandrug.com) and Sanddlemans (saddlemans.com) line the room.

FAMILY ROOM
“This wonderful room was completely transformed with aqua draperies, bold Roman shades and new lounge chairs, kitchen table and chairs, covered in a light green, flowering pattern,” says Anderson, who used her client’s existing sofas and added elegant, embroidered pillows, side chests, artwork, prints and accessories throughout the room.

Anderson’s selections for the room included a breakfast room table and chairs from Century Furniture with fabric from Galbraith & Paul (galbraithandpaul.com), side tables from Villa & House (vandh.com), lounge chairs from Century Furniture and drapery from Glenmar Draperies.

DINING ROOM
The design team nodded to the living room’s color scheme in this space—only with lighter and crisper hues. “We painted the ceiling and walls in classic colors, creating a feeling of timelessness,” says Anderson. “Their dining table and chairs from Hickory Chair (hickorychair.com) and beautiful buffet are all new pieces, yet they have a vintage feeling. The table’s apron has brass fluted details capping each leg. The blue draperies from Glenmar Draperies have a bold, modern floral design featuring abstract, stylized blooms. The Shumacher print is a painterly, free-spirited pattern that lends itself to coordinating with the adjacent butler’s pantry.

BUTLER’S PANTRY
“This space was a wonderful blank slate for us,” says Anderson. “We went bold with a Phillip Jeffries wallpaper that was authentic artwork inspired by topography. It became a large, abstract mural, which we embraced with custom matching the light blue paint for the trim and cabinets,” says Anderson, who added lighting from Visual Comfort, a glass backsplash from Chevy Chase Glass (chevychaseglass.com) and hardware from Push Pull Decorative Hardware (pushpullhardware.com).

HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
“Our clients are very happy in their beautiful home,” says Anderson. “We’re fortunate to continue working with them on a second phase— redesigning their outdoor patio, screened porch, primary suite and more.” Something tells us more color (and fun) are on the way.
