Here, we venture out back—to the enviable pool, grill and lounge space—with By Design Interiors, Inc. senior interior designer Ashton Joseph as she shares her favorite backyard moments.
How did the home’s clean, modern aesthetic translate to the exteriors?
The home’s clean design runs throughout the exteriors—the architecture, by Flair Builders, features polished lines, matte black finishes and a crisp white color palette. As you enter the front door, you’re immediately immersed with views into the backyard through large glass sliding doors. The streamlined furnishings, porcelain hard surfaces and open-concept layout of the kitchen, dining and great room create an ‘easy-flowing’ feeling throughout the home and seamlessly blend the interiors and exteriors.

What was the inspiration behind the outdoor space?
We were inspired by the natural beauty of the Woodlands. The homeowners’ lot has a great location with large acreage and views of a pond with a water feature from their pool and backyard area. The design concept was to enhance the natural beauty of the location by mixing new plants and trees recommended by the horticulturist and landscape artist Michelle Riley.
Did the homeowners have any must-include designs for the outdoor space?
They wanted a space that they could relax in while also being spacious enough for large gatherings. Creating a ‘resortlike’ environment for hosting was at the top of the list for their new home! We imitated the house’s clean-lined architecture into the landscaping design by creating a modern pool with beautiful blue tile that exudes the ‘luxury beach resort’ vibe.
What are the highlights of creating the outdoor entertainment areas?
The outdoor dining areas are nicely covered, so rain or shine, an event can still be held! It has a huge outdoor counter space for food and beverage access, making the grilling area the spot to gather and hang at!
Are there any other exciting details or stories that you can share?
The exterior tile floors—sourced from Arizona Tile—in the backyard living area are the exact same tile as the interior of the home. However, it is outdoor-rated with an anti-grip finish. This was selected to keep a clean transition flowing from interior to exterior; it creates a harmonious look of one continuous space when the sliding doors are all the way open.
