From the outside, Back Bay’s storied townhouses offer a glimpse into the Victorian era, but on the inside, designers can play. One home weaves together nostalgia, the unexpected and dapper details with romantic 19th-century architecture, thanks to Hacin (hacin.com) and Sea-Dar Construction (seadar.com).

The local interdisciplinary architecture and design studio transformed a six-story, 6,400-square-foot space into a playful contemporary home that highlights historical elements. “The Victorians were not afraid of ornamentation, which our team embraced but modernized with color blocking, scale, pattern play and a touch of surrealism,” says interiors principal Jennifer Clapp, who worked on the project with Hacin’s architecture and interior design teams. “The house is playing dress up and winking at us… a bit subversive yet elegant.” Inside the three-bed, four full- and three-half-bath townhome, captivating details guide your eyes from room to room: think midcentury accents, bold patterns, silk upholstered walls, leather-lined coffered ceilings, handpainted wallcoverings, moody hues, pops of blue and original dark wood accents.

Each space is connected by a stylistic relationship while embodying its own personality, whether masculine, feminine or a synergy of both. “We chose theatrical wall patterning that might be described as feminine but rendered it in foggy colors which harken to Edwardian culture, which is generally more masculine,” notes Clapp. Beyond the design elements, the renovation reconfigured the floorplans to ensure each common space flowed effortlessly into the next for intimate or large social gatherings. The finished townhome aligned perfectly with the client’s lifestyle and youthful sensibilities. Clapp concludes: “They’re over the moon.”
