HELPFUL HARDWARE
Nest Studio (neststudiocollection.com) by Jessica Davis launched a new series focused on versatility and as an ode to the 20th-century design evolution. Available this winter online and through showroom partners, the new series Aperture features knobs, handles and appliance pulls designed with retrofit applications in mind. The pieces, both linear and minimal in design, play with the idea of light as it enters and exits positive and negative spaces. Due to the interior designer’s focus on retrofitting, the hardware is the perfect tool to cover existing mounting holes, eliminating the need to refinish existing millwork, thus saving equity—sweat and otherwise. In satin brass, polished nickel, matt black, polished brass, unlacquered brass and more, the possibilities are endless with Aperture.

TEXTILE TRADITION
It was in the preparation for Swathi and Kartikh Khambhampati Indian wedding that the bride, Swathi, realized their celebration of Indian colors and textiles, while beautiful, was hard to come by—many of the wonderful textile traditions were on the verge of extinction. This is what launched Fairhaven Circle, 10 pillows emphasizing ethically manufactured heirloom-quality products rooted in India’s deep textile traditions. Here, the Atlanta-based husband and wife founders discuss their goals and inspirations with the first collection, “Nushka.”

What inspired you to start this line? SK:“The idea took years to develop, sparked in 2010 while sorting my grandmother’s sari collection. I realized the need to preserve exquisite craftsmanship and promote it through home décor in the states.”
Can you describe the process of working with artisans in India? KK:“Swathi emphasized the need for top-tier quality, aspiring to rival Schumacher. Some artisans initially didn’t grasp our vision due to their isolated backgrounds, but those who believed in our mission and shared our commitment to excellence quickly yielded exceptional results. Our unique bond with artisans propels our success.”
What are the specific textile traditions featured in your debut collection? SK:“Nushka specializes in embroidery and printing, drawing inspiration from Parsi, chikankari, and dori embroidery. We use the term “inspired by” since these techniques are trademarked. While we aim to collaborate with the collectives, we emphasize the historical significance of these traditions and make them accessible to customers worldwide.”
Pillows from the Nushka collection
What is your favorite piece from “Nushka”? SK:“ This pillow is inspired by chintz, native to Andhra Pradesh, the state in southern India where our families both originate. Chintz was hugely popular in Western Europe before the know-how was stolen and mechanized in European mills. Bringing it back is special, restoring dignity to the artisans whose livelihoods were taken when chintz was stolen.”
