Esteemed designer Anelle Gandelman transforms a classic Soho loft into an elegant oasis.
The living area is appointed with a Dennis Miller chaise, a floor lamp from Urban Electric and a coffee table sourced from The Bright Group.
THE PROJECT
A-List Interiors founder Anelle Gandelman was called on to redesign a classic loft apartment nestled on the building’s fifth floor in the heart of the Soho Cast-Iron Historic District. The newlywed finance and attorney duo felt the traditional style of this a four-bedroom, three-bathroom apartment was too conservative for their taste, so Gandelman got creative. “The style is transitional—a blend of tailored comfort mixed with a few edgier pieces in keeping with the downtown location,” she says. “We wanted to create a space that was warm and inviting for the family, but also chic enough for a large cocktail party while mindful of the original architectural details of the space.”

Hickory Chair sofas, Made Goods side tables and Kravet rugs create an inviting atmosphere in the living area.
THE CHALLENGES
Due to the unevenness in the old Soho building, installing paneling in the primary bedroom was tough for Galdenman. “We had to find the right balance between lines being level but also looking straight in relation to slanted walls and floors,” Gandelman says. “We were also not able to get a full slab of stone up to the apartment due to a smaller service entrance and historic elevator. This led us to design an inlaid brass detail on the island counter which ended up being a very beautiful feature of the kitchen.” Just as the team was finishing the project, the apartment above had a leak that trickled down creating damage, resulting in added work for Gandelman and her team.

THE DETAILS
With flowy blue curtains in the living room, Gandelman punctuated the soft color palette with a black cocktail ottoman, gray cushioned chairs around the dining table, and the kitchen’s wooden black island base. “We also incorporated pieces that had a sculptural quality, like the glass co ee table with bronze base in the living room, to add another layer of visual interest and personalization,” the designer says. Original exposed brick in the living room is complemented by rich warm reds with throw pillows, benches and coffee books sprinkled throughout. The original wooden beams and floors were also kept and restored, but Gandelman decided to completely renovate the very traditional kitchen.

THE OUTCOME
The home exudes a perfect balance of luxury and edge. Original abstract art pieces by artists like Kim Keever, Steven Alexander, Chris Hayman and Richard Serra gave the home a tasteful element while simultaneously adding small bursts of color. The black and brass curated furniture and decor gave their loft an overall flawless sleek look with wallpaper that harmonized each room you stepped into. “We never met the person who referred us, but it really speaks to the impact of a well designed space,” Gandelman concludes.
The chic powder room is complete with Romo Fabrics wallpaper and a mirror from Mirror Home.
In the primary bedroom, Métaphores drapery, via Kravet, is complemented by a Baker bed and a luxe Mr Brown ceiling light.
Weitzner wallpaper and a Kohler sink add elegance to the kids’ bathroom.
