Lauren Rottet

Houston - Architect & Interior Designer at Rottet Studio

How would you describe your personal aesthetic? I often joke that I could live in a white box with simply an abundance of sunlight and beautiful and amazing art. I am a minimalist in the sense that I like highly edited spaces that are visually clean and where each detail is celebrated and objects of furniture, art or other are showcased.

What is a design trend you are loving now? I love the sculpted architectural fashion that is hitting the runway. Marie Antoinette meets Moschino was awesome.

What is a trend that you are over? Everything being Brooklyn turn of the century! We live in 2020, not 1899.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? "If you recognize what you are designing, you are not designing," from a professor at the University of Texas. He meant that copying is not designing. Designing is a fresh, new invention that solves a series of requirements with focus, skill and style.

Wallpaper or paint? Both! I love custom-designing print for a wall covering, and I love beautiful paint colors used together to create a mood. Paint is magic. Think Charles Rennie Mackintosh—pattern, graphics and tones of paint become the design!

What is the best bang for the buck? Views are free. Start with the architecture and focus your views and manipulate the way the space moves you around, then consider all else.
