What first sparked your passion to launch Elizabeth Lake? I’ve always loved old and beautiful things. My mom was a docent at the Dallas Museum of Art while I was growing up in Dallas, and I was fortunate to be dragged around museums as a kid whenever we would travel. That early love led me to pursue art history and then a master’s degree in the decorative arts. Studying the history of furniture, textiles, silver and porcelain informed a deep appreciation for old-world craftsmanship. A love for handmade objects is ultimately what inspired Elizabeth Lake. I wanted to create something traditional in craft but that still felt fresh and festive for the modern-day host.
What is the best part of the job? In non-COVID times, being on the ground with the artisans in Portugal is the most exciting and enjoyable element of our work. There’s endless inspiration on the tiny Portuguese island of Madeira, and collaborating is always more fruitful in person. It’s equally gratifying seeing my first designs on the tables of friends, family and new customers.
Who would you say is the driving force for your everyday endeavors? My brother passed away when I was younger, and it’s served as a constant reminder to really live. As cliche as it sounds, life’s too short to not pursue something you’re passionate about. It’s why we say bring out the good stuff and celebrate often.
What is your motto?
There’s no occasion too small to celebrate!
