DESIGNER AMY FERRER OF MIKO + BOONE HOME TRANSFORMS A BUCKHEAD TOWNHOME.
For each space, Ferrer started with the rug and fabrics then built everything else around them, as seen in this sunny fourth-floor entertainment room.
Ferrer says she was ecstatic to learn that her clients “loved color, and lots of it!”
The best modern aesthetics are not done in a single style but a mix—it’s that hint of casual cool that makes for good design. Amy Ferrer of Miko + Boone Home had casual elegance on the brain for her clients who were looking for “no-fuss in-town living in this hip, colorful Buckhead townhome. They wanted touches of glam and rustic pieces,” she explains. Her power-couple clients brought her in to help create an experience where “guests would feel welcome, like they were staying at a nice hotel, but also still be comfortable. They loved elegance and glam, but also rustic touches, and much to our delight, they also loved color, and lots of it!” says Ferrer. “Many clients are afraid of color, so this was music to my ears.”
Because the homeowners enjoy having friends over, the designer turned the breakfast room into a space for entertaining, complete with a pub table and temperature-controlled wine fridge.
The clients, entrepreneur Dan Barracliff and sales executive Amanda Watkins, “both work from home quite a bit, and they wanted to create an environment that was hip and elegant, yet a comfortable space to work in,” Ferrer explains. Like many commissions, the two met Ferrer through a mutual friend and brought her in at the beginning of construction. “It took 12 months from the time they called us to delivery and installation,” she notes.
An original painting by Britt Bass Turner—a “must-include” for the homeowners—provides a focal point upon entering the townhome.
First up: Get on the same page as the builder. From there, floor plans with complete design plans were schemed out, including furnishings, lighting, rugs and fabric for every room. “It can be overwhelming for clients, so we try to meet two or three times to make these final decisions for a home,” says Ferrer.
Swivel chairs with a plinth base by Wesley Hall provide the perfect pop of pattern and bold color in the entertainment room.
Ferrer specializes in whole homes and got to work tackling the four floors of the townhome, which included many rooms such as a guest bedroom, a patio, a foyer, a great room, a powder room, a keeping room, several bedrooms, an office, a master suite and more, all adaptable to the clients’ lifestyle. “The homeowners enjoy entertaining and having friends over. With that in mind, we made the breakfast room an entertainment room with a pub table and temperature-controlled wine refrigerator, and created a fourth-floor guest bedroom and lounge featuring another entertainment room and large patio for watching TV, reading or relaxing.”
The townhome’s delightful mix of rustic and glam is on full display in one of the guest bedrooms.
“With this project, we primarily started with the rugs and fabrics for color and texture, and built the rooms around those pieces,” she shares—with a notable exception being the dining room. A large Britt Bass Turner original painting was a must-include, and Ferrer pulled the turquoise color from the painting for the dining chairs.
Vibrant hues anchor the living room, which features a custom sofa by CR Laine and fabrics by Kravet.
Ferrer notes her clients were a dream to work with: “It’s great to have clients who trust us and our expertise,” she says. For example, “We found the beautiful turquoise dining chairs at one of our favorite High Point Market showrooms, Lillian August for Hickory White. They were perfect for the dining room. ... I shared a photo with the clients and they responded quickly to purchase them. They were always responsive, open to everything we presented and quick to make decisions.” She’s not just being complimentary: “This project really went so smoothly,” says Ferrer, with hardly a snafu in sight. “It’s the most colorful project I have ever designed, and has become one of my top favorite home designs.”
