Madison Lily Rugs continues its 25-year tradition of crafting luxurious handknotted rugs with its latest collaboration, a colorful endeavor with renowned international designer Benjamin Johnston. The inaugural release of the collection, known simply as Flight, features a motif of vibrant exotic plumage that underscores Johnston’s uncanny eye for unexpected natural textures, and his keen interest in the world we call home.

“These designs are essentially art installations… so impactful and exquisite that I imagine many collectors will not only use them underfoot but will also hang them on their walls,” says Johnston. “I envision them as the moody backdrop to chic lounges, lavish dining spaces and jaw-dropping grand foyers.”
Indeed, the sweeping array of feathers are rendered in more than 20 high-definition saturated colors including citrus, lapis, saffron and teal combined with shaded accent tones that lend each rug a luxurious three-dimensional quality suggesting it could very well take to the air. Handmade from 60% to 80% silk and 20% to 40% high-mountain wool, the pieces of art range from $11,200 to $19,600.

This spring will mark Johnston’s second release, entitled Geometrica and featuring designs that reflect his background in architecture. Full-bleed rugs will boast bold graphic patterns and will be crafted from handspun silk and handcarded high-mountain wool. Each rug is step-dyed using up to 30 colors of thread while intricate stippling and sculpted levels creates striking variations in texture and luster.
